Texts and calls from unknown numbers

Last updated 2026-10-12

When someone who isn't in your contacts texts or calls your team, TED still logs it. The Unknown numbers view in the Contact Hub is where those texts and calls wait until you decide who they belong to.

Finding unknown numbers

Open the Contact Hub, stay on the Contacts tab, and select Unknown numbers in the row of views above the list. The number next to it is how many are waiting for you.

  • Team admins see every unknown number that texted or called the team.
  • Everyone else sees the ones that reached them — texts and calls on their own number or handled by them in the phone system.

The ones that reached you also show on the Unknown numbers card on My Book.

Each row shows the number, the last text (or Missed call, Voicemail, Incoming call, Outgoing call), how long ago it was, and who it reached. Select the number to read the whole conversation.

If nothing is waiting, you'll see "No unknown numbers — every text and call is matched." If your team hasn't connected a phone system yet, the view tells you to connect one first — see Connecting a phone system.

International and garbled numbers

TED keeps every number it receives, even ones it can't fully read:

  • Assumed international — the number arrived without a country code marker and doesn't look like a US number, so TED assumed the first digits are the country code. Check it before you rely on it.
  • Couldn't parse — the number is too short, too long, or garbled. TED shows the digits it received.

TED never sends a text to either kind. When you save one on a contact, the contact's Text box doesn't offer it — if it's their only phone, you'll see "Add a phone number to their name to text them." Edit the phone on the contact into a full number with its country code to text them.

Creating a contact from a number

Select Create contact on the row. The new contact form opens with the number already filled in as their phone — add a name and anything else, then save. The conversation, with all its earlier texts and calls, moves to the new contact's Texts & Calls tab and the row leaves the list.

An assumed-international number is saved without the + TED guessed, so it stays un-textable until you confirm it. The form says so: "Saved without a country code — edit the number and add + and the country code to text them." Once you know the number is right, edit the phone on the contact and add the + and the country code.

Adding the number to someone you already have

Open the ⋯ menu on the row and select Attach to a contact…. Search for the contact, pick them, and select Attach number. TED adds the number to that contact's phones, and the conversation moves to their record. An assumed-international number shows the same "Saved without a country code" note here and is saved the same way.

You need edit access to the Contact Hub to create or attach. A number that's too short or garbled to save shows "Can't be saved to a contact" instead — you can still ignore it.

Ignoring a number

Open the ⋯ menu on the row and select Ignore to hide it — useful for spam and wrong numbers. Select Undo in the confirmation if you didn't mean to. To see ignored numbers again, turn on Show ignored; open the ⋯ menu on an ignored row and select Restore to bring it back.

Ignoring only hides the row. If you later save that number on a contact, its texts and calls still move to them.
